Minister Selçuk: "The Number of Our Family-Accompanied Girls Supported with SES Approached 70 Thousand"


Minister of Family, Labour and Social Services Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk stated that the number of girls cared for by foster families has risen to 4.277 and that the number of girls supported with Social and Economic Support (SES) service in the company of their families is nearly 70 thousand.

Stating that they prefer supporting children under protection primarily in the company of families, Minister Selçuk noted, “The service we call SES (Social and Economic Support) is also aimed at supporting our children in the company of the family. Today, with SES, we support more than 134 thousand children alongside their own families. We have approximately 70 thousand girls benefiting from this service.”

Selçuk expressed that the number of girls in care facilities has risen to approximately 6.500 and the number of girls cared for by foster families to approximately 4.300.

Noting that as the Ministry, they always prioritize projects and activities that will uncover the potential of girls, Minister Selçuk stated, “We contributed to the education of our girls through Conditional Educational Benefits, the construction of girls' dormitories, and awareness activities. We achieved great success in schooling rates of our girls with the policies we implemented as the Government and projects such as "Come On Girls, Let’s Go to School" under the auspices of Distinguished First Lady Emine Erdogan.”

Female Literacy Rate Rose to 95%

Emphasizing that while the literacy rate for women aged 6 and above was 80.5 percent in 2018; this rate rose to 95 percent in 2000, Selçuk remarked, “Preschool education rate is on a rapid increase. While schooling rate for girls in pre-school education was 31 percent in 2009-2010 academic year, this rate rose to 41 percent for girls aged 3-5 in 2019-2020; 52 percent in 4-5 age group; and in age group 5, it rose to 70 percent.”

Net Schooling Rate for Girls in Primary Education Exceeded 93 Percent

Pointing out that the schooling rate of girls in primary education was 87.34 percent in 2002-2003 academic year, Minister Selçuk stated, “As of 2019-2020 academic year, the net schooling rate for girls in primary education exceeded 93 percent and 96 percent in secondary education. The schooling rate of girls in secondary education rose to 85 percent in 2019-2020 academic year.”

"An Educated Mother is the Key Factor on the Path to Healthier Generations"

Underlining that schooling rate of girls in higher education rose to 46 percent in 2019-2020 academic year, Selçuk stated that an educated woman, mother is the key factor on the path to healthier generations.
